Marathon Training Recap – Week 14

Ohmigosh, you guys?!  I had an AWESOME week of training last week!  Wow, that’s first time I’ve said that in a while, huh?  And, it’s FINALLY nice out!  All you midwesterners totally know what I’m talking about, right???

This past week:

Monday – Hot Yoga

Tuesday – 4.16 mile run (no watch, no music) and Hoy Vinyasa

Wednesday – Rest

Thursday – 3.55 mile run to break in the new kicks followed my watching my alma mater become ELITE (eight, that is).

Friday – Rest…kind of.  Went for a short walk with C to celebrate the 60 degree day I’ve been waiting for!

Saturday – 18.39 miles @ 9:22 pace.  I was feeling amazing up until mile 14.  That’s when I started the inner-motto of “just keep running” (Dory-stye).  I was actually really pumped with this pace because it was a smidgen faster than the last 18-miler I did.  Woo!  Go me!

Sunday – Hot Vinyasa.  This was a little rough, but I still really love this studio and class.

This past week’s long run was a week late, which is honestly not that big of a deal.  The first four miles were tough, so I tried to utilize as much positive thinking as I could.  In my mind, I replaced “Why do people do this?” with “I’m really struggling with XX right now, but it’ll get better”.  And you know what?  It did!  Another example – instead of cursing at the hills or drizzle, I tried to spin it into a positive thing and they weren’t that bad.  I always forget how mental running is (90% apparently).

I have also really enjoyed the addition of yoga to my routine.  I’ve thought, “I really want to go to yoga tonight” and I haven’t felt that way about running in a while.  I honestly think that having more practice with a  mind/body connection is great for my long runs (what with the positive thinking) and connecting more with my body.

OK, so some goals for next week:

Monday – Short run (3-4 miles)

Tuesday – Short run (3-4 miles) & Yoga

Wednesday – Yoga

Thursday – Medium Run (4-5 miles)

Friday – Rest

Saturday – 20 miles! Ahh!

Sunday – Yoga

Can you tell I’ve totally caught the yoga bug?  I know I’m not a yogi nor am I buying up some Lululemon, but I think I can get really into this.  Especially since it’s HOT yoga! 🙂

How did last week go?  What are your plans for this week?  Link up and tell Jen and I all about it!

  1. Great week! “Just keep running” is my mantra for the long/tough miles too! The mind and body connection is so important, I completely agree with that!

This week marked the end of my first “official” week of training for the Jog4Jugs half marathon May 11. After some deliberation I finally signed up for it and I discovered I’m in a good position for training.

    • First of all, that is the best half-marathon name…EVER. Second, I am so excited that you linked up. Third, I seriously couldn’t believe how important staying positive was. And finally, I am so excited to see your training and stuff for your possible BQ. You rock. For reals.

PS: Can you tell we’re working on writing today in my classroom? 🙂

      • Haha, yes, Jog4Jugs is a great race name! Thanks for the words of encouragement! I’m not looking to BQ though, no full marathons for this chick! I’ll stick to halfs (halves?). Look at us and our fab writing skills, LOL!

  2. Great job this week! That 18 miler pace looks great! I’ve got the hot yoga bug too! I had to miss class yesterday because of Easter and I won’t make it today because I’m going to opening day and I’m hating not going! I have 20 miles this Saturday too!! I’m oddly excited haha!

    • You totally inspired me to go to Hot Yoga! I am loving vinyasa (it’s *only* 90 degrees instead of 100). I had to justify the expense to Hubby last night after my (really cheap) one week pass. I’m pumped about the 20 miler too, actually. We got this. 🙂

    • Thanks Amanda! I’ve started writing really positive post-it notes to stick on my work desk and on my mirror at home. “Just Keep Running”, right?

  3. Wow, that is an amazing pace!! I had a REALLY tough 19 mile run this past weekend, but I did it! My run plans are Mon-2mi (did this morning, had to cut it from 5 down to 2 as I think my feet needed a break), Wed-9mi, Thurs-5mi and Sat-15mi (hopefully hubby can go with me for this one!) I’m hoping my body is up for it!

  4. Oh man, I’m totally catching the yoga bug too, big time! I’m excited to start mixing it with running–I’ve heard they get along pretty well. 🙂 Congrats on an awesome week of training girl!

  5. Great week! Have fun with the 20 miler 🙂 You are almost there, yay! Love the Dory quote 😉 Watch Nemo all the time with my 3 year old.

  6. Awesome week! I really wish I could get into yoga because I’ve heard it’s great for runners, but I just can’t seem to get into it! I’ve only tried regular yoga before is there a huge difference with hot yoga?

  7. I love hot yoga! I’m sharing my Marathon Monday a day late 🙂

About 2 (or maybe 3) I said I had a perfect training week for the first time in what seems like forever. Sadly we’ve had more snow since then but I’m hoping as of now we’re done with it. It’s amazing how much the power of positive thinking helps get you through a rough spot.

    I have a 20 miler next weekend!

    • I am in shock that you got more snow. I’m not sure what I will do if it snows again (it’s supposed to be 55-60 this weekend!). Positive thinking and warmer weather are the keys to success for us runners at this point! 🙂 Thanks for linking up!
